It's actually gotten worse for us lately. I'm hoping we're still around by the end of the summer or I'm out of a job.

I hear you; and I share your concerns. On the positive side, I was starting to hear a little, scattered and non-specific, about publishers having had less than stellar experiences with off-shore (primarily India) production houses. And I'd been having my best two-year period ever. But then the economy crunched. That said, I still have work coming in--layout work at the moment; and I'm talking a coupla design-and-layout projects. I don't accept $3 per page jobs.

Another piece of excellent writing Herne. There just seem to be too many people in between where you sit, and the content producer. The flatter this can become, the better the margins will be for those like yourself who actually make these authors look good. It's another traditional power structure, that will be whittled away by the new economy.

@Stephen Tiano - I'm managing a couple of jobs being done by India comp houses and frankly they are horrible. There is no consistency. There are page elements floating all over the place. There are 329 guides on each page. Master pages are being ignored. Styles are being ignored.

Gawd help the person that has to do a reprint.
